The commitment Chroma has made to our community, individual students, and ourselves is to offer: Anti-Macho, Gender-Affirming, Anti-Racist, Inclusive martial arts training.
Everyone deserves to train Jiu-Jitsu in a place where they feel not only safe, but honored. We have worked hard to remove or neutralize the toxic patterns that can show up in martial arts communities for example: Things like the “Gauntlet” after promotions, inappropriate actions or speech on the mats, unfair treatment of students, or even non functional “warm-ups”. Sometimes these negative values are byproducts of lack of care from the leadership, and sometimes they are inherently part of a community’s value system. Either way they have no place at our facility and we strive to maintain quality of teaching, and care for our student base and their families.
Martial arts training inevitably pits a practitioner against their own ego, the question then becomes if that person can recognize that ego and confront it. I am a firm believer that BJJ offers you whatever you need to work on internally. If you are too meek, and get pushed around in life, then it will present opportunities to work on that meekness. If you are too aggressive and sure of yourself, then the chance to develop softness will show. I have found that as we oscillate toward one extreme, then the opposite extreme arrives to “check” us and re-align our trajectory.
Our community is a reflection of the values that we hope to instill in our students but also the values they have brought in. Values such as respect for others, professional conduct on and off the mats, being an asset to the community, facilitating personal growth, clear communication, safe training, and humility.
The hope is to create an environment that celebrates our differences and paths in life. To lead the student, teacher, and community to a place of validation, recognition, and transcendence.
